Fellow Award
The Fellow Award was given to Dr. Clement Hamani for his work entitled "Bilateral Anterior Thalamic Nucleus Lesions Are More Protective than Stimulation Against Pilocarpine Induced Seizures and Status Epilepticus". Coauthors were Drs. Ewerton, Bonilha, Ballester, Mello, and Lozano.

Distinguished Service Award
The Society was itself honored with the opportunity to present its Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Philip Gildenberg and to Dr. Thomas Karger. For many years Dr. Gildenberg kept the flame of stereotactic surgery alive when interest in this field was at its nadir. In numerous ways the current success we are enjoying is due to his unflagging and uncompensated efforts.

As the head of S. Karger, the noted Swiss medical publisher, Dr. Karger has supported our society as publisher of our official journal -- known first as Confinia Neurologica, then Applied Neurophysiology, and lately as the Journal of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery. In addition, S. Karger has served as the stereotactic secretariat for a long time, keeping the administrative structure of organized stereotaxy viable.

The CNS Stereotactic and Functional Resident Award
This year's CNS Stereotactic and Functional Resident Award was won by Dr. Ziv Williams of the Massachussets General Hospital for his paper "Direction Selectivity of Pallidal and Subthalamic Neurons in Parkinson's Disease", authored by Drs. Williams, Cosgrove, and Eskandar.
